# GitHits CLI Skills setup

> Install GitHits Skills when you prefer a Skills workflow that calls the GitHits CLI instead of MCP tools.

Guided `npx githits@latest init` installs four Skills alongside MCP by default:

* `githits-onboarding` guides setup and sign-in.
* `githits-mcp` routes public OSS research through MCP tools and embeds the stable quick-start guide.
* `githits-code` uses equivalent CLI commands when MCP tools are unavailable.
* `githits-package` uses package CLI commands when MCP tools are unavailable.

Check that the CLI works in your agent's environment:

```bash theme={null}
npx githits@latest auth status
```

For a Skills-only setup, choose **Install Agent Skills instead** during interactive `init`. You can also install the Skills directly:

```bash theme={null}
npx skills add githits-com/githits-cli
```

Choose your agents and user or project scope during installation.

Do not run the direct Skills installer on top of a guided `init` installation. Guided setup already installs and repairs the same four skill directories.

## Automatic refresh

From CLI 0.26.0, local MCP startup [refreshes older, unchanged GitHits-managed `githits-mcp` skills](/cli/configuration#the-skills-section). It never installs missing skills. Hosted MCP does not refresh local files. Start a new agent session to load updated guidance.

## Relationship to MCP

Skills prefer MCP tools when available and fall back to CLI commands. The `githits-mcp` skill includes the usage guide, so the agent normally skips [`quick_start`](/tools/quick-start).

To switch from MCP to Skills:

1. Run `npx githits@latest uninstall --keep-guidance`, or disable the GitHits MCP server for that harness.
2. Confirm the GitHits CLI works with `npx githits@latest auth status`.
3. If you did not keep the packaged guidance, install the Skills with `npx skills add githits-com/githits-cli`.
4. Start a new harness session so it loads the updated instructions.
