# Quick start

> Connect your coding agent or software factory to GitHits through MCP.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Check Node.js">
    GitHits requires Node.js `^20.18.1` or `>=22.13.0`.

    ```bash theme={null}
    node --version
    ```

    Install or upgrade Node.js at [nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Run setup">
    ```bash theme={null}
    npx githits@latest init
    ```

    Select your coding tools and follow the setup prompts. Guided setup configures MCP, authentication, and supporting skills.

    See [supported tools](/installation/automatic-setup#automatic-install-support) or [manual remote setup](/installation/manual-setup).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start a new agent session">
    Ask your agent to inspect a dependency:

    ```text theme={null}
    Use GitHits to inspect the package version used in this repo. Find the API or error involved, read the relevant source, and explain the behavior before editing code.
    ```
  </Step>
</Steps>

For other integrations, see [CLI commands](/cli/commands) and the [API quickstart](/api/quickstart).
